In the past couple of years, the advancements in the fields of genomics, artificial intelligence, and blockchain technology have set themselves on a collision course. The advancement in genome science research has made genome sequencing a possibility, but the amount of money it costs hinders its widespread adoption.
The break-through advancements in artificial intelligence research and application have robots effectively stealing jobs from otherwise human hands. And the blockchain has revolutionized all of it by providing transparency while maintaining high standards of security and reliability.
But put these three fields together and you have a project that will essentially make genome sequencing and DNA data storage affordable and one day, common. Working with these three vast fields of science and technology to bring out a product and platform like no other are the team members of Shivom.
What is Shivom?
Shivom is a product and platform that aims to make healthcare a more contributory and collaboration driven industry. By allowing patients a safe and secure environment to store their health records and DNA data and at the same time providing concerned industries the reliable data they need to make effective products, the Shivom platform aims to make healthcare records more accessible at the same time, auditable.
At the core of Shivom’s vision, is the teams want to educate the masses, especially those with limited access to quality healthcare, of rare diseases so that for one, they can be better understood and secondly, alleviate them all together.
Fixing a broken healthcare system
People at Shivom believe that the current healthcare system that is being used globally is broken and needs some massive reformatory fixes. All healthcare data like medical history, predisposition to certain illnesses, DNA data, etc are stored in a very disorganized fashion in multiple databases that have little to no backend connection to each other. Which makes it harder for medical professionals to make a timely diagnosis and start treatments.
Another major industry that gets affected by the compartmentalized format of storing data, is the medical research, and drug development fraternity. Because of the lack of reliable data at their disposal, a lot of drug developments are hindered and eventually abandoned.
While there is a requirement for a decentralized database to store global healthcare data, there have to be equal measures taken for securing it. Which is where the blockchain comes in. So what the Shivom project aims at, ultimately, is to have a globally accessible database of healthcare information and data that is safe, secure and reliable. Which further helps the drug industry to come out with effective products to cure the illnesses that, till now, have no standing cure.
Will effectively bring down the price of quality healthcare
Because of the disarray in the way data is stored in the healthcare industry, organizations like the FDA suffer because it prevents them from doing their job. The use of the blockchain also ensures that all the data that they receive is genuine and has not and cannot be tampered with.
By taking genomic data and putting it on the blockchain, Shivom ensures that the data that is added is real, cannot be modified, deleted or audited and reinsures trust in the data provided. Which in turn makes drug trials more successful and objective, which further brings down the cost of medication and treatment because of its existing and proven track record during the course of development.
Public Appraisal
One of the major problems that common people face with things like identity and data storage is its security. There have been a number of instances where governments have information about their citizens hacked because of the ease with which the lax security measures can be scaled.
Which will be a problem that Shivom, when widespread adoption starts, will have no problems with because of its blockchain use-case. The blockchain, though it is best known for its transparency, is a very secure and reliable method of data storing.
The company is already receiving a lot of praise for venturing into the healthcare industry and attempting to fix it, but the most recent and probably one of the biggest breaks for the company is the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India’s eighth largest state, Andhra Pradesh.
Memorandum of Understanding with Andhra Pradesh
Andhra’s government, led by Chandrababu Naidu, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Shivom with the IT sector advisor’s blessing, to make predictive medicine practices for the state’s 60 million citizens.
Shivom is now, with this partnership with the state’s government, setting up an office and development center in the seaside city of Visakhapatnam and will work in accordance with the state’s International Institute of Digital Technologies, which is based out of Tirupati.
The country already has some history with poorly managed databases with the government’s Aadhaar project and with the global attention that internet giants like Facebook and Google are grabbing over the large amounts of data they store without citing any valid reasoning, the outrage that surrounds data storage is at its peak. But companies like Shivom are safe from these sort of problems because of their smart incorporation of the blockchain technology.
And with the added advantage of the project being tied to the healthcare industry with an aim to reduce the cost of its access and make it more available, it is being welcomed with open arms in the state.
Shivom is a revolutionary project that is set to radically change the way the healthcare industry functions. It aims to make the industry more accessible to patients, researchers and drug developers by connecting them to each other. And with the way that the trust in the medical profession is being diluted, a global initiative such as Shivom is more than welcome.
